Giant african pouched rats are clearing Mozambiques minefields

Or how simple and low-cost operant conditioning can save lives. This is the kind of human-centered design solution I like!

Original news here.

A researcher is training rats in Mozambique to detect and wait for a human everytime they smell a landmine. Although huge, the rats are not heavy enough to activate a mine, which seems a win-win situation.

The idea is not new, and I’ve heard in before in my Psychology of Leaning classes, but it seems like a pretty cool solution.
